Write Right
Handwriting Program
Developed by Occupational Therapists in Cache County and Logan City School Districts (2001)
Before initiating this
program:
1. The student must have the ability to draw the following shapes: circle, cross and square
2. The student must have the ability to hold onto a pencil with a three fingered grip. If they do not, please contact your school-based Occupational Therapist.
Program
requirements:
1. The student will need adult supervision and feedback as they complete
each task.
2. The student will trace and draw each letter in the order identified on the practice sheets.
3. The student will perform this program at least 5 minutes
three times a week to develop the motor planning and motor skills associated with handwriting.
4. The student will correctly complete each item in each level before moving to another level.
Helpful
reminders:
1. The paper should be positioned at a 45 degree angle.
2. Feedback should reflect the following parameters: stroke sequence, use of ascenders and descenders, letter spacing, word spacing, letter slant, letter height, cleanliness of erasures or cross-outs, and the letter’s relationship to the line.
3. A handwriting rubric which is written out and reviewed with the student prior to each handwriting session will help integrate those features into spontaneous writing. There are rubrics on the Write Right Program page of this website and available online.
4. Feedback may also reflect how light or dark the letters appear. If this does not resolve with simple instruction, then this may indicate a need for Occupational Therapy intervention.
5. The Write Right worksheets may be photocopied for educational purposes only, provided that the recognition to the authors is retained.

Each area is broken up into progressive families. Do not progress to the next step unless mastery is achieved in the current step...
